Chapter 1
Nix could trace the downfall of their plans to the moment she ate the pizza guy. It wasn’t as if everything was all rainbows and puppies before this. Nix had been curating a mental list of complaints leading up to the matter. But ultimately, the cannibalism took them over the top. The hunters she’d been traveling with found her squatting over a dead body in the foyer of their rental cabin. Flesh had lodged between her teeth as she slurped and crunched. Her arms were elbow-deep in the guy’s warm entrails. Three steaming pepperoni pizzas were smooshed into the welcome mat and scattered down the front steps, adding a rich cheese-and-meat smell to the sharp, iron tang of the blood. Her host body twitched, shivered, and jerked with adrenaline. She couldn’t calm the tremors, couldn’t be bothered to care. It was so hot, and she was so hungry. On a normal day, the hunters would have pulled her off, attacked her, taken her down without a second thought. This day, not so much. It must have been the sight of a partially eaten corpse when they’d expected Italian thin-crust that threw them. Or maybe it was the fact that their beloved kin, Elliot—Nix’s willing human doll—was the one chewing on a dead man’s dripping organs. Daniel Whipsaw, a veteran who’d seen some shit and never once batted an eye, doubled over next to the staircase and puked. His adopted daughter, Rachel, stared with wide eyes. Nix-in-Elliot kept on chewing. Not her best moment, she could admit that. Thing is, it wasn’t her fault. Okay…it’s not as though the guy’s throat accidentally fell into her mouth and she had an uncontrollable jaw spasm. But big-picture-wise, the whole situation had little to do with Nix and she was just sort of…there. Incidental. Unlucky. Blameless. Some individuals, who’d remain nameless, might have argued otherwise, but they weren’t sharing a ravenous body with her—they didn’t get it. This was, in fairness, the kind of thing Nix had often threatened to do to people who pissed her off—usually in graphic detail to get the point across. But it was all showmanship. She would threaten, idiotic humans would back off or give her what she wanted, and they’d all go their separate ways. Some of them died violent and entertaining deaths at her hands, but she’d never actually eaten any of them raw like this. What was she, an animal? If it wasn’t paired with a nice Chianti and prepared by a qualified chef, long pig was not on the menu. She did not sign up for this. It wasn’t her nature that was responsible for this mess—it was Elliot’s, Lunatic Hunter Number 2, in order of age. Rachel was the youngest at a fresh-faced twenty, making her Number 3. She was the one Nix made the grave error of underestimating while riding around in her body until Rachel turned out to be a disturbingly powerful witch. Number 1—Danny, the burly old father figure of the group with vomit clinging to his beard—he was just an asshole, nothing special. But Number 2, harmless big-brother soldier boy, turning into a cannibal? Nix hadn’t seen that one coming. Unfortunately, since she was currently sharing his body, she was also sharing his meal. The hunger had started slowly. Barely noticeable. So easy to overlook and underplay. It was nothing…until it was everything. Insatiable Nix - Released June 29th, 2021. Find it on all platforms.
